چکیده

[1] Sensitivities of tropospheric winds and stratospheric Brewer‐Dobson Circulation (BDC) to SST warming are explored in an aqua‐planet atmospheric general circulation model. The tropospheric zonal wind change is quite sensitive to the location and sign of the gradient of SST perturbations with respect to the climatological jet. For the experiments with low latitude warming, the Hadley cell is intensified in the deep tropics, yet the Hadley cell boundary contracts for narrow meridional extents of warming and expands for broad extents of warming, associated with changes in extratropical eddy‐driven winds. Despite the complex changes of tropospheric wave forcing, the strength of the BDC is increased for all the experiments with low latitude warming. For the experiments with high latitude warming, the strength of the BDC decreases only if the warming extending to the subtropics. Citation: Chen, G., R. A. Plumb, and J. Circulation Response to Climate Forcing: Uniform SST Warming

7 The mechanisms of the atmospheric response to climate forcing are analyzed using an ex8 ample of uniform SST warming in an idealized aqua-planet model. A 200-member ensemble 9 of experiments is conducted with an instantaneous uniform SST warming. The zonal mean 10 circulation changes display a rapid poleward shift in the midlatitude eddy-driven westerlies 11 and the edge of the Hadley cell ci...

Structure and variances of equatorial zonal circulation in a multimodel ensemble

The structure and variance of the equatorial zonal circulation, as characterized by the atmospheric mass flux in the equatorial zonal plane, is examined and intercompared in simulations from 9 CMIP3 coupled climate models with multiple ensemble members and the NCEPNCAR and ERA-40 reanalyses. The climate model simulations analyzed here include twentieth century (20C3M) and twenty-first century (...

Some Atmospheric Processes Governing the Large-Scale Tropical Circulation in Idealized Aquaplanet Simulations

The large-scale tropical atmospheric circulation is analyzed in idealized aquaplanet simulations using an atmospheric general circulation model. Idealized sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are used as lowerboundary conditions to provoke modifications of the atmospheric general circulation. Results show that 1) an increase in the meridional SST gradients of the tropical region drastically strength...
